You Gotta Move

Does the thought of exercise give you nightmares? Would you rather go to the dentist than the gym? Do you despise aerobics? There’s nothing wrong with you. Those activities may not be comfortable. But neither is getting winded when doing basic household chores. Here’s the good news. You don’t have to exercise to be healthy — you just gotta move!

In our current sedentary society, what we lack is physical motion. Alternative exercise may be the solution. Alternative exercise is simply engaging in a physical activity that falls outside the parameters of what we think of as “normal” exercise. And physical activity helps combat many health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol — the list goes on.

Alternative exercise can be as simple as roughhousing with your kids or playing with your dog. Yardwork and gardening count, too. The key is consistency. It’s simple. Find something, anything, that moves you and makes you move … every … single … day.

Get Back To Your Youth

Go back to your childhood. What did you do for fun? At some point, you probably played hide-and-seek, tag or kickball. Did you know that many cities now have kickball leagues for adults? Were you a Little Leaguer in football, baseball or basketball? You don’t have to start up a game (but games are always fun) — just get out in the yard and play catch or shoot some hoops. Can you throw a Frisbee disc? Great exercise. How about Frisbee golf? Even better. Or Ultimate Frisbee. Now that’s intense.

Whether you get back to your childhood roots or learn something new, there are thousands of ways to get off the sofa.

Perhaps you hate all things competitive. No problem. Take a dance class — or yoga or tai chi. Go sightseeing or birdwatching or hiking. Remember, your body was never designed to be sedentary. Simply get more active throughout your day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, rev up your household chores or take a brisk 30-minute walk. Just find something that moves you!

Why, Why, Why?

Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. It can put the spark back into your love life. Regular physical activity can improve energy levels and physical appearance. It also stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. These benefits are the same as traditional forms of exercise. You burn calories, tone muscles, reduce stress and more. So, get out there and find something that moves you!
